What will you do as work?
The workcamp leaders will work as a team under the supervision of the Project Manager of the organization. They will be involved in preparing, organizing, running, and evaluating nature-oriented, agricultural, and environmental protection projects in Iceland. Those projects are organized with international volunteers and usually last for 10 – 14 days. In each group, there are one or two leaders from the organization. At the end of each camp, the project coordinator will be expected to produce an evaluation of the projects and their results.
At the beginning of your stay, you will receive qualified training from the organization members. This training will capacitate you to perform the project´s activities, which vary from cleaning beaches, planting trees, cutting lupine, forestry, greenhouses, and different kinds of environmental-related tasks to taking care of environmental awareness campaigns. At the same time, you will receive guidance on how to Plan, Organize, and Lead the projects, including topics such as Group Management, Conflict Resolution, Logistics, Free time Management, Leader roles, Intercultural cooperation, Motivation, etc.

Course of studies:
We are looking for people with experience in the fields of Journalism, Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Data Management, and Computer Science. WF would like to host someone motivated to work for an NGO promoting environmental and peace-oriented activities.
Skills and competencies:
Our leaders have to be positive and highly motivated to participate in group activities. Ability to organize on her/his initiative. Time-management skills and ability to work under time pressure during high peaks of the season.
Linguistic skills:
Upper-Intermediate level of English
Duration:
Program from 12 weeks, or 6 months, up to one year.
Accommodation:
You will be staying in one of the houses depending on the project you are joining:
- On the outskirts of Reykjavík, you will stay at the “Farm”
- In the South, Hveragerdi or Sólheimar The Ecovillage
- In the North, you will stay in the Worldwide Friends in Siglufjörður.
- In the West, you will stay in the sustainable center in Brú.
Food:
Food will be provided; however, volunteers are expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning.
As a camp leader:
There are always two or more leaders for each camp, depending on the size of the group. Leaders represent the link between the hosting community and the group of volunteers. Coordinate the work, Organize free-time activities, Plan excursions, Shopping, cooking sessions, etc. Apart from these additional responsibilities, they are equal to the other volunteers. Most of our camp leaders are from other countries, as we are very open-minded in hosting international leaders from other organizations. All our leaders start their program with one week of training.
Your task will also be to help the office team with different tasks; planning projects, bookkeeping, keeping in touch with the intercultural cooperation, writing projects for Europe Erasmus+, etc. Most of our office workers are from different countries. All our leaders start their program with On arrival training.
Study theme:
In the year 2024, global warming and marine plastic will be the study themes in all our camps. Each working day the volunteers will have study sessions and practical training on how to reduce our impact on climate change.
